There is a thing often said about the ways that faeries behave differently than humans — “they cry at weddings and laugh at funerals” — and I kept coming back to that when I thought about how Kaye should behave. I wanted her never to have the expected reaction to any situation. Not to seem totally other, but to seem other enough that she would seem, well, a little “off.”

What that resulted in, though, was a character who was a TON OF FUN to write, because she was incredibly curious and likely to be completely contrary. Tell her not to touch clover, she was going to roll around in it! She liked to get into trouble, liked to dare big. I never had to drag her off the couch and into danger. I loved that. Some of my more sensible characters make me miss it.
